Ryan's story - The guest talks about his journey including writing a book called Introduction to Sports Memorabilia by Ryan Walsh, starting a prep center with a friend (called Encore Business Group) and triumphing over some very difficult family situations during this time!

This segment is an encouragement to anyone experiencing difficult life situations! The guest discusses in detail some of the hurdles he overcame including family illness and divorce. Jim correlates what the guest shares to the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous (and Celebrate Recovery) - starting with Step 1 - admitting I’m a mess and ending with Step 12 - helping others get out of what I was in! A favorite saying of Ryan's is, “Pressure makes diamonds or dust!”
The guest shares how he is running his prep center FT, maintaining a presence on AZ utilizing Replens, trying different models for his business and continuing to study The Proven Amazon Course (PAC). Jim puts in a plug for the Coaching Program, which consists of more than 60 coaches and to date, has coached nearly 10,000 sellers! Jim and the guest discuss this Proven Product Partnering as a business model (found as a module in PAC) which teaches sellers how to partner with brands to get their products on Amazon.
The guest shares details about his previous career, which was working for the CIA for 7 years. During this time he traveled the world internationally but started to have health issues. These experiences helped him recognize the poverty around the world and the appreciation for all we have. Jim reminds the listeners how blessed we are in the US and what an “overcomer spirit” the guest has. Jim shares 2 thoughts - 1) A VA is no better at sourcing than their seller is - the seller needs their own system and processes in place in order to train their VA to do it the way the seller wants it done 2) The Proven Bot Sourcing content course (not in The PAC yet) - is great for those sellers who have extensive wholesales lists to work through and mentions that OA simplified is a great training course as well. (in the PAC). There is also a course in The PAC that teaches how to find a VA!
Jim talks with the sellers about growing their businesses! - from hiring VAs, to finding people to help with prep and then moving to a prep center. The hardest work sellers will do is from $0-$5000, after that processes are in place and it becomes easier to grow the business!
The guests give some additional helpful tips: 1) When ready for a prep center, be ready to really amp up the inventory volume! 2) Be prepared to pivot with your business model(s) as needed! 3) As you continue to build your business, keep good people and good systems in place and build on those!

He regretted that we inadvertently moved away from discussing the layout of his converted trailer (after mentioning that we would do so during the episode). He uses this converted trailer as a mini-warehouse space. Watch the youtube version of this episode to see the nice layout.
He told us that, "I kinda flippantly made a reference to returning a large item if it didn't sell. I would like folks to understand that I genuinely don't typically buy things with returning it being my out at the end. This item, however, comes from a store where I have been friends with the assistant manager for over 15v years (long before he was ever working at this store). In fact, he will even let me know when stuff that he knows I'm sourcing is back in stock. I guess my point is that I'd like folks to know that I try and be very respectful of the stores where I make my purchases, because I understand that the potential return of a positive long term relationship with that particular store/location will pay much bigger dividends than the short term gain of dumping items back at stores that I was unable to sell. I just don't want people to think that I just run out and return everything that doesn't sell."
The guest also wanted to clarify that he does understand, endorse and use the "above the buy box" strategy (as taught in the provenamazoncourse.com/abovebb module found inside the ProvenAmazonCourse library) - he thought it may have sounded in the interview like he didn't quite understand or endorse the "selling above buy box" strategy, but he wanted to point out that he most certainly does.
If you have no money or your account is held up for some reason, source, source, source!
Had a client who was waiting on a large payout and all he did was source test worthy ASINs for 3+ months
When he got his payout he started sending in his test worthy ASINs and went from minimal sales to $50K in 3 months…that’s mainly run rate on tests, not much in the way of replens yet
BUT…more dollars = higher risk when new
The real value in your business is the ASINs, not the capital
Selling above the buy box is a strategy that works. We see it all the time.
There is no place to see this strategy working in Keepa and the only way to know would be to test it.
This is not necessarily intuitive and we don't know of another place it is being taught.
We could keep this information to ourselves and many would never know it, but we are sharing because we want to see you have success too
Working with new clients we see the day-to-day progress
Day 1: I can find anything to test! Day 2: I found some to test!
Day 31: I’m not making any sales! Day 32: I just got my first sales!
Perhaps the adage, it’s always darkest before the dawn is true!
If you just give it 1 more day the sun will come out

He's doubled his business this year over last year and he has big goals for the future.

Today's guest quit his last "real job" in the late 90s (on the day he won employee of the month at his last employer) and has been an entrepreneur in e-commerce since then. The first 15 minutes of our discussion is his history of ups and downs with various business models, including how he lost everything in 2014 when he inadvertently broke laws that he didn't realize existed.
